The Yarra Ranges Emergency Relief Network (YRERN) is a collaborative network of Yarra Ranges-based groups and organisations dedicated to providing emergency relief and support to the Yarra Ranges community. Established in 2010 to help coordinate efforts across numerous local groups, YRERN initially focused on bolstering food support. Since then, it has expanded its scope to enhance community resilience to natural disasters and other emergencies.

With a particular focus on bushfire, the Healesville Community Bushfire Group bring the people of Healesville and surrounds together to build resilience in the community. "We come together to share knowledge and learn from each other, build strong community relationships, increase our knowledge of emergency management, better understand local issues and have a say about what we think will help to make the Healesville community safer during emergencies."

The Powelltown Residents Water Association took on the vital task of preparing Powelltown and its surrounds for emergencies, particularly bushfires, in 2011. A core group of proactive members did so with a strong desire and sense of obligation to share their knowledge and experience of the fire risk for the benefit of newer residents. The Adaptation Game (TAG) is a cooperative table-top game used to help individuals and communities understand climate change impacts and brainstorm solutions for adaptation and resilience

In October, we teamed up with Manningham Council and other partners from the Eastern Metropolitan Councils Emergency Management Partnership (EMCEMP) to host a joint Emergency Relief Centre (ERC) exercise. Alongside staff from other councils, The Salvation Army, Australian Red Cross, Animal Aid, and our local Emergency Services we practiced setting up an ERC and coordinating a swift, effective response to emergencies. By regularly running these exercises, we strengthen the partnerships between local councils and agencies, allowing us to share resources, knowledge, and expertise—ensuring we’re always ready to support each other when our community needs us most.

Yarra Ranges Council has opened a new Changing Places accessible toilet and change room facility at Pink Reserve Sporting Stadium in Kilsyth. This marks the sixth facility of its kind in the Yarra Ranges and a significant step forward in fostering an inclusive community.

Born out of the Kallista Village township group, the Kallista Emergency Group (KEG) was formed in mid-2023 together with Kallista-The Patch CFA, Parks Victoria, and Yarra Ranges Council with a mission to develop a grassroots Community Emergency Management Plan in consultation with the community that can be deployed and actioned in the event of a natural or other disaster impacting the communities of Kallista, The Patch and Sherbrooke. As the Kallista Emergency Group is still in the forming stages, focus to date has been on fact finding and networking with other established emergency groups in the Yarra Ranges to understand what has been working well in their communities and how those lessons can be applied our community.
