Hey, I’m Derek — a photographer and videographer based in the Yarra Ranges, Australia.
I live and work on the lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation, and I want to pay my respects to Elders past, present and emerging — the original storytellers and caretakers of the land that we love. Always was, always will be.
My love for photography started pretty simply — I just wanted to capture some good stuff. The faces, the chaos, the quiet, the moments that you can’t really explain but you know when you see them. I used to think I was just collecting pictures— turns out, I was learning how to tell stories.
What began as a hobby with a beat-up DSLR somehow snowballed into an actual job in journalism and shooting pics professionally at Healesville Sanctuary, snapping wildlife and people alike — a few of those shots even ended up in magazines and newspapers, which still feels slightly unreal.
